My Brother’s story

Dr Neil Wilkie

I have been a bit overweight for most of my life. After a heart attack 3 years ago while I was out cycling, I decided that I needed to address my physical health and stress levels after my CABG4 and near death experience.

My blood markers showed me to be pre-diabetic and with high cholesterol. I had been put on a large number of meds post surgery, which had deleterious side effects and, with the agreement of my GP, weaned myself off all of these.

Despite good levels of exercise; 10k cycle ride every morning, weekly PT, Yoga and Pilates alongside a diet that I rated as healthy, 80% of the time, my weight stayed too high at about 97kg and a BMI of about 32. I tried various programmes including Zoe, Fast 800 etc and lost some weight but not for long. The insidious calls for bread (even though it was healthy rye sourdough!) and ice cream overrode all logic and will power.

I read widely about Ozempic and Mounjaro and was sceptical, thinking that ‘it was cheating’, the side effects would be significant and, I was an intelligent person and should be able resolve this myself. With the encouragement of Dr Chris, my cardiologist, I started on Mounjaro 3 months ago. The impact has been astonishing. The food noise switched off on Day 1 and I have lost 14kg and feel great. My relationship with food is now effortlessly healthy. The side effects have been minor and I have had 2 months on 2.5mg and am now on 5mg which is a very low dose. My blood markers are all in the good range and I am planning to wean myself off Mounjaro in the next two months.

My recommendation is to try it, with medical supervision, it can have a magical impact.

A Patient

I have been apprehensive of medication relating to weight loss for a long time having tried to eat the right things, and exercise regularly. But it’s easy to slip before you know it the weight piles on…  After talking to Chris at length, we decided to give Mounjaro a try.

I did get some initial but very mild side effects, but quickly this disappeared and it was suddenly much easier to eat smaller portions and be fully content. To say it is life changing would be an understatement.

It has allowed me to exercise far more freely and easily, as the burden of the weight has dramatically lifted, and has really allowed me to enjoy life. I highly recommend talking to Chris, because he won’t “sell” you it, he will talk to you about what you want, and need, and he will advise you on the best option.
