A New Era in Medical Weight Management

For many people, losing weight can feel like an uphill struggle. Diets come and go, gym enthusiasm fades, and progress can be slow. As a Consultant Cardiologist, I’ve seen first-hand how excess weight affects heart health — and how frustrating it can be when lifestyle efforts alone don’t bring results.

Recent years have brought a genuinely exciting development: a new class of hormone-based (GLP-1) medications designed to support weight management.

Originally researched for type 2 diabetes, these medicines work on the body’s natural appetite and metabolism-regulating pathways. In large international studies they have shown significant benefits for both weight reduction and cardiometabolic health.

These treatments are prescription-only and can be considered after a detailed medical assessment.

They’re not a “quick fix”, but – used safely under supervision – they can sometimes help people make meaningful progress while establishing lasting habits around food, movement, and wellbeing.

My approach

At Coastal Cardiology, any discussion of medical therapy forms just one part of a broader programme that also includes:

  • Comprehensive assessment of heart and metabolic health
  • Nutrition and exercise strategies tailored to your lifestyle
  • Regular follow-up to review progress and safety
  • Support with stress management, sleep, and long-term maintenance

My role is to ensure that every step is guided by robust evidence, safety, and sustainability.

Could GLP-1 Treatment Be Right for You?

These medicines are sometimes considered for adults who are living with obesity or overweight and have related health conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or type 2 diabetes.
The decision is always individual and made after a consultant-led evaluation of your overall health and goals.

How long might treatment last?

Everyone’s journey is different, but in most cases medical treatment for weight management is used for a defined period rather than indefinitely. This allows time to identify what works best for each person and, crucially, to establish the healthy lifestyle habits that make long-term success possible.

The ultimate goal is not to rely on medical therapy forever, but to use it as a bridge — a period of progress that helps people build sustainable routines around nutrition, exercise, sleep, and stress management. When that foundation is in place, many are able to continue maintaining their health and weight without ongoing treatment.

Throughout the process, I work closely with patients, offering regular reviews and practical support to keep motivation high and to address challenges as they arise. I’m genuinely passionate about this area — and I practise what I preach. I believe in the power of small, consistent actions to protect our health for the long term.

It’s human nature: most of us take better care of our teeth when a dentist visit is coming up. Similarly, I find that regular check-ins help people stay engaged, focused, and accountable as they work toward their goals.

What about side effects?

Any form of medical treatment can occasionally cause side effects, and part of my role is to ensure that all potential options are discussed safely and transparently during consultation. The key is close medical supervision and an open conversation about risks and benefits before any treatment is started.

I’m also a strong believer that the most powerful “side effect” of positive change comes from the lifestyle habits built along the way. Maintaining muscle strength is particularly important when losing weight, which is why I encourage resistance and strength training for almost everyone — whether in their twenties or their nineties. Keeping active supports metabolism, bone health, balance and overall vitality.

During follow-up reviews, we’ll talk through progress, troubleshoot challenges, and make sure every aspect of your plan supports both heart and metabolic health.
